Singing Valentines Make a Sweet Return
By Ava Bauer
After a virtual school year during which many school traditions were temporarily lost, singing valentines at West High are back. On February 11, for the first time in two years, West carried out its tradition of singing valentines, with groups of festive serenaders going from class to class to deliver musical performances to students and staff.
Beginning in 1994 under former choir director Eric Johnson, the longstanding tradition of singing valentines has been maintained by Anthony Cao and serves as a fundraiser for West’s choir program, with the five dollars Regents spend on each valentine often going towards upgrades such as new risers.
After a year without singing valentines, the West community was eager to see the return of the tradition. This enthusiasm was evident when, this year, over 900 valentines were purchased — one of the highest sales numbers West’s choir program has ever seen. These valentines were allocated between 14 groups of singers. These groups - which include West a cappella groups Ten and Chromatic - are often made up of students involved in choir, but can also include other singers and musical instruments. The multitude of requests sent groups roaming all over the school each class period, delivering musical messages to their peers and staff members. Between the successful sales and widespread enthusiasm, this year’s singing valentines solidified the triumph of the return of one of West’s most beloved traditions.
